we didn't expect it to hit so soon,with such force ,and from so many directions.Digital cameras from manufacrtuers in the film,computer,and medicalimaging fields burst onto the commercial market The flood of filmless cameras introduced this past year took many of us by surprise——we didn't expect it to hit so soon,with such force ,and from so many directions.Digital cameras from manufacrtuers in the film,computer,and medicalimaging fields burst onto the commercial market,while a few video giants,including Canon,Fuji,and Sony,hung on with the second and third versions of their still-video devices (which require an external digitizer for analog-to-digital image con- version).All together,the year ushered in more than 20 new filmless cameras,each guaranteed to bring images to the desktop faster than film can. With models ranging in price from $ 695 to $ 75,000 and targeted at everyone from photojournalists and studio photographers to publi- shers and serice bureaus,it would seem that there's a filmless camera for just about every print need.But for every new model some questions remain.The answers depend largely on the type of CCD (charge coupled device)the camera employs. CCDs are chips containing handreds——and sometimes thousands—— of evenly spaced receptors that convert light (already split into its red,green,and blue components by filters)to an electrical signal.This signal can then describe the image in digital form to a computer (as with flatbed scanners)or in analog form to an NTSC video monitor(as with camcorders).CCDs have been around for quite some time,yet the technology is far from perfected. Producing a chip with each and every receptor in perfect working order is still difficult and expensive——only a few camera companies, including Eastman Kodak and Sony,can shoulder the burden. To reduce production costs,many manufacturers are abandoning the three-chip designs used in many video cameras(in which light is split into its red,green,and blue components by a prism,which in turn casts each color onto a dedicated chip) for more cost-efficient one-chip designs (in which each row of photoreceptors is filtered for either red,green, or blue).Add to this a move to smaller chips——resulting in fewer rece- ptors per color——and it's easy to see why potential filmless camera buyers remain doubtfulof image quality. Fortunately,manufactuters are also devising ways to get more re- solution and bit depth out of these much smaller chips.That's the reason there are so many different models out now——manufacturers are trying to make the most out of the limitations of CCDs.Some are trying to achieve the highest resolution or color fidelity,and others are off- ering convenience and rapid image capture.For each method,there will be trade-offs in quality,cost,and convenience.Digital Photo,Digital Camera
